ORGANIC NATURAL PROBIOTIC DEODORANT
The purpose of ingredients in a natural (using plant-derived ingredients and minerals, instead of
synthetic chemicals like aluminum, parabens, or artificial fragrances) deodorant is to counteract any
odor-causing bacteria on the surface of skin without adversely impacting the dermis, the layer of skin
where sweat glands, pores, and hair follicles are located. Body odor (BO) is the result of bacterial activity
producing odorous compounds. The skin microbiome, a balanced ecosystem of beneficial “good” skin
bacteria can prevent the growth of other, potentially harmful microbes. Lauric acid (LA), a naturally
occurring fatty acid in coconut oil (CO), can inhibit the growth of bacteria by membrane disruption and
induce ROS production, magnifying the outgrowth inhibition effect on spores; antibacterial [in the human
body, LA is converted by lipase enzyme into monolaurin with [up to 200x more effectual (Schlievert,
2012)] antimicrobial activity against bacteria/viruses], and antifungal (particularly against C. albicans, a
type of yeast) which can destroy the lipid membrane of bacteria. Monolaurin inhibits bacterial growth,
reduces exotoxin, and forming biofilms, by reducing the hydrophobicity of bacterial cells and preventing
attachment of bacterial cells. CO capric acid can contribute to odor control by reducing the source of odorcausing bacteria. Sodium bicarbonate loosens debris and dissolves mucus, prevents acidophilic bacteria
overgrowth, and inhibits cysteine-thiol lyase by affecting the pH and altering the reactivity of the thiol
group in cysteine, essential for the catalytic function of the enzyme converting Staphylococcus hominis
that feed on odorless chemicals released in sweat into (pungent compound) thioalcohol. Probiotic (beneficial bacteria) lactobacillus ferment (LF) can acidify its environment and produce bacteriocins, antimicrobial peptides, proteinaceous or peptidic toxins to inhibit the growth of similar or closely related
bacterial strain. LF inhibits the growth of pathogens by secreting antibacterials, it inhibits the growth of
pathogenic bacteria by competing for nutrients, and by producing antimicrobials (organic acids/carbon
dioxide/ ethanol/hydrogen peroxide/bacteriocins); LF may have an effect on cysteine-thiol lyase enyzme.
Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant jojoba oil (see note below) can produce non-greasy
moisture that absorbs easily into skin. Natural, healing, moisturizing, and soothing. Jojoba oil has behenic
acid, erucic acid, gondoic acid (aka 11-eicosenoic acid), oleic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic
acid, vitamin B complex, and vitamin E (1-2%). Emollient gondoic acid lubricates, moisturizes, and
protects skin; functions normally performed by sebum produced by healthy skin; noncomedogenic (not
likely to block pores), can be easily absorbed by skin, helps to control sebum production and prevent
breakouts; leaving a glowing complexion without the feeling of a heavy oil resting on skin, unclogged
pores and softened, stubborn blackheads. Excellent odor protection, goes on clear from a container made
with 100% recyclable plastic. Not an antiperspirant, pores not blocked by aluminum salts (clogged pores
can lead to acne), the body can naturally cool itself with perspiration (sweat). Made with plant-based oils,
which could stain any fabric and/or clothing; natural deodorant will soften in warm temperatures and
harden in cooler temperatures. Armpits might detox when switching to a natural deodorant. Detox
process is different for everyone, but you may experience extreme stinky-ness or staining in the armpit
area of your clothes for a time when transitioning to a deodorant that does not contain aluminum.
