Unlike RBD (Refined, Bleached and Deodorized), this cold pressed, virgin coconut oil (VCO), retains its
delicious natural coconut scent, and do not be confused when you notice no fragrance listed. The RDB
process removes the natural color and many of nutrients in the oil; like fatty acids; capric, caprylic, lauric,
linoleic, myristic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic. VCO has anti-inflammatory and skin protective properties;
clinical studies have revealed that VCO improves the symptoms of skin disorders by moisturizing and
soothing skin. Anti-inflammatory activity of VCO by suppressing inflammatory markers and protecting
skin by enhancing skin barrier function. Topical application of VCO can provide anti-inflammatory
activity by inhibiting the various cytokine levels including TNF-α, IFNγ, IL-6, IL-5 and IL-8 and improves
skin barrier function by upregulating AQP-3, filaggrin and involucrin mRNA expression and by protecting
against UVB irradiation. VCO can help with skin disorders with permeability barrier dysfunction,
especially those accompanied by reduced epidermal protein expression, such as atopic dermatitis, eczema.
The saturated fatty acid, lauric acid in VCO has antibacterial qualities. VCO can inhibit the growth of S.
aureus [Staphylococcus aureus (staph) is a bacterium commonly found on the skin and in the nose of
about 30% of individuals] with destructive mechanisms of bacterial cell walls and increase the ability of
the phagocytic immune cells.
VCO can help with skin health: wound healing, can help wounds heal and prevent scarring with its antiinflammatory, antibacterial, and moisturizing properties; wound healing migration, can help with wound
healing migration; natural chemical derivatives from VCO can inhibit and prevent the pro-inflammatory
signal expression by COX-2 [Cyclooxygenase-2, an enzyme that plays a key role in inflammation, pain,
and other processes in the body) with less side effects than classical NSAIDs (indomethacin aspirin, and
ibuprofen) and inhibitors (celecoxib, rofecoxib, and valdecoxib)]; VCO can help reduce inflammation and
redness caused by UVB rays; can help treat rashes like atopic dermatitis by improving skin barrier
function and boosting collagen production; its fatty acids can help with acne and protect skin from
harmful bacteria; reduce wrinkles, anti-wrinkle qualities and can make skin firmer; and can remove eye
makeup without irritating eyes. VCO emollient properties can form a coating over the hair shaft, sealing
the cuticle and trapping in moisture. Its lubricant qualities can provide increased slip in between hair
strands, detangling hair, smoothing and flattening the cuticle surface, improving health and appearance
of strands. VCO can reduce/prevent protein loss for both undamaged and damaged hair; VCO, being a
triglyceride of lauric acid (its principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its
low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft. VCO can help
calm scalp irritation, flaking, and itching; can help prevent hair breaking and split ends; can protect hair
from water and heat damage; can strengthen the hair cuticle, which can help protect hair from
environmental toxins; and can help reduce symptoms of scalp psoriasis.
How to use: Deep conditioning: Apply coconut oil to wet hair before shampooing and conditioning, and
leave it on for 30 minutes. For extra hydration, you can leave it on overnight. Hair mask: Apply coconut
oil to your hair and leave it on for 20–30 minutes. You can cover your hair with a shower cap or wrap it in
a hot towel to help the oil penetrate your hair. Rinse the oil out thoroughly, which may require multiple
wash-rinse cycles. Detangler: Warm a small amount of coconut oil in your hands and apply it to dry, midlengths, and ends of your hair. Pre-wash conditioner: Use coconut oil as a pre-wash conditioner to help
with dandruff.
