BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 15 LIP BALM WITH ZINC OXIDE
Daily use of sunscreen can reduce risk of melanoma (most dangerous skin cancer) by 50 percent, and
squamous cell carcinoma (a form of skin cancer/1.8 million cases in U.S./year) by about 40 percent;
help prevent premature skin aging caused by the sun (24%); wrinkles, sagging, and age spots.
Luscious organic oils for soft, smooth, and supple lips. Zinc oxide [with superior photostability and
ultraviolet (UV) spectrum coverage] sits on top of skin, providing a layer of safe and effective (see notes
below) protection against UV rays. Zinc oxide can provide UV protection primarily via absorption of UV
radiation and not through significant reflection or scattering. It is able to absorb UV and turn it into
infrared light (a type of radiant energy that is invisible to human eyes but can be felt as heat) which it
disposes of as heat. SPF 15 (see notes below). Broad spectrum SPF (sun protection factor) refers to sunscreen that protects skin against the broadest range of UV rays; UVA, long-term skin damage (wrinkles),
some skin cancers; and UVB, sunburns, most skin cancers. High SPF sunscreen that is not broad
spectrum will not protect skin against all UVA rays.
Both coconut oil and olive oil are occlusive moisturizers; they seal in moisture, and are also emollients
(protect, moisturize, and lubricate skin), so they can soothe and smooth lips for a lush, moisturized feel.
However, they do not draw moisture into lips or skin. Fatty acids in olive oil can form a barrier on lips
that can protect them from environmental irritants and harmful UV rays. This barrier can hydrated and
prevent lips from becoming dry or chapped. Antioxidative properties may protect lips and skin from the
sun by scavenging free radicals produced by UV radiation that damage skin cells. Cocoa butter, an
emollient with natural antioxidants, choline, oleic acid, vitamin E and K; adds a protective hydrating layer
to lips, helping protect them from extreme temperatures and indoor heat that can leave lips dried out.
Beeswax forms a protective barrier on the surface of lips and skin, protecting them from environmental
irritants and harsh weather. Beeswax is noncomedogenic (does not block pores), allowing lips and skin to
breathe freely, making beeswax beneficial for acne-prone and sensitive skin. Vitamin E has restorative
skin properties and healing abilities, and can prevent lips and skin from losing moisture, protects cells
from damage, and softens lips and skin. Natural flavoring from botanical extract derived from the ripe
fruits of the Vanilla planifolia orchid whose qualities include: soothing and calming irritated skin,
antibacterial properties helping to fight acne breakouts, reducing the appearance of scars, protecting skin
from environmental pollutants and toxins, reducing skin infections, slowing down signs of aging like fine
lines, wrinkles, and age spots (freckles), and aiding in the healing of wounds.
How to use: Apply to lips. Apply generously and evenly fifteen (15) minutes before sun exposure.
Reapply at least every two (2) hours and/or after eighty (80) minutes of swimming or sweating. Reapply
immediately after towel drying. Children under six (6) months of age, consult with a doctor before use.

Notes: Per the FDA, only sunscreen active ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have GRASE (generally recognized as safe and
effective) status. The SPF number tells how long UV radiation of the sun would take to redden skin when using the product exactly as
directed versus the amount of time without any sunscreen. With SPF 30 it would take 30 times longer to burn than if you were not wearing
sunscreen. The SPF rating only refers to UVB rays. A SPF 15 sunscreen blocks 93 percent of UVB radiation, and SPF 30 blocks 97 percent.
After that, the difference in protection is small. SPF 50 blocks 98 percent, and SPF 100 stops 99 percent of UVB rays from reaching your skin.
